BIMM118
Textbooks
Unfortunately,
there is no
perfect textbook for BIMM118, as most pharmacology texts
are aimed at students in medical schools, schools of pharmacy etc., and are
consequently far beyond the scope of BIMM118.
Therefore, no textbook is required
(all lecture notes will be posted on this website and are available for download).
Those student whose interest in pharmacology is so deep that they wish to own
a book can find below a (by far not complete) list of the most popular pharmacology
books (in descending order of comprehensiveness and difficulty [in the personal
opinion of the instructor]):
![]() |
The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 11th Edition Joel G. Hardman, PhDLee E. Limbird, PhD Alfred Goodman Gilman, MD, PhD The "Bible of Pharmacology"! The book of choice for hopeful MDs and PharmDs. Very comprehensive and challenging! |
![]() |
Basic & Clinical Pharmacology Bertram G. Katzung, MD (Editor) Also a great choice for prospective MDs, but overkill for BIMM118 alone (requires strong knowledge of medical terminology) |
![]() |
Human Pharmacology: Molecular to Clinical Theodore M. Brody, PhD Outstanding textbook, well illustrated. A bit beyond the scope of BIMM118, but nevertheless a good choice. |
![]() |
Pharmacology, 6th Edition Humphrey P Rang Probably the best text for BIMM118. Contains also a lot more material than can be covered in the course, but is very well illustrated and is easy to follow. |

Color Atlas of Pharmacology, 2nd edition Heinz Lüllmann, MD NOT a textbook, but an outstanding resource to gain an overview of pharmacology and to review the discipline (e.g. before exams). |
